The Rise Of Coal Fired Electricity

Coal-Fired Power Plants: A Global Perspective

The Rise of Coal-Fired Electricity

Coal-fired power plants have played a significant role in global electricity generation for decades. These facilities burn coal to generate steam, which drives turbines that produce electricity. As of 2023, there are over 2,400 coal-fired power plants worldwide, with a combined capacity of approximately 2,045 gigawatts (GW).

China's Dominance in Coal-Fired Power

China has been the driving force behind the growth of coal-fired power generation in recent years. Since 2000, the country has doubled its coal-fired power capacity, accounting for a large share of the global total. In 2022 alone, China added 11 GW of new coal-fired power plants to its grid, driven by energy security concerns and local economic interests.
