Internet Shut Down in Bangladesh Amid Student Protests
Nationwide Internet Access Disrupted, Mobile Services Severely Impacted
Bangladesh Faces Growing Internet Penetration, Concerns over Shutdown
Bangladesh is currently experiencing a nationwide internet shutdown as protests erupt across the country. Internet users have been denied access since Wednesday, July 18, 2024, at 7:22 PM PDT, leaving millions of citizens offline.
According to recent statistics, Bangladesh has seen a significant increase in internet usage, with over 116 million internet users as of March 2021. This represents a 70% penetration rate among the country's 167 million population.
However, the current internet shutdown highlights the challenges Bangladesh faces in ensuring reliable and accessible internet for its citizens. As of January 2024, the country had 77.36 million internet users, with an internet penetration rate of 44.5%. By contrast, in January 2023, the number of internet users was 66.94 million, and the penetration rate stood at 38.9%.
The internet disruption has sparked concerns among the Bangladeshi population, who rely heavily on the internet for communication, education, and economic activity. The government has not yet provided a clear explanation for the shutdown, but sources indicate that it may be related to ongoing student protests.
